Foot Attacker/Mounted Defender

A footsoldier faced with the prospect of a fight against mounted cavalry is in a sorry state indeed. His opponent is (generally) more mobile, fighting from a superior position and is often able to bring the power and mass of his mount to bear in combat. Furthermore the footsoldier may find his weapon to be of insufficient length to properly engage the enemy. Fortunately, there are a few tactics that, though dangerous to attempt, can be successful against such an opponent.

Weapon Selection

There are no restrictions on the weapons useable against a mounted opponent. However, several weapon type have less disadvantages than most. Two-Handed Axes, Two-Handed Swords and all Flails and Polearms may attack a mounted opponent without penalty.

Tactical Options

In addition to the usual tactical options, a footman may choose to attempt to Tackle the Rider - considering the penalties imposed on mounted characters when Bashed this can be an effective, if painful, option. A second tactical option available to the footman is to attempt to hamstring the mount. The Shield Parry tactic is +5% less effective against a mounted opponent.

Attack Modifiers

All weapons that are NOT Two-Handed Axes, Two-Handed Swords,Flails or Polearms suffer a -5% to hit penalty against a mounted opponent.

Bash Modifiers

A Bash delivered against an opponent on a moving mount applies an additional +1 Vigor. A Bash delivered against a charging/galloping mounted opponent applies an additional +2 Vigor.

Hit Location Modifiers

It is appropriate to add 10 to the location roll, treating any result greater than 100 as a hit against the mount.
