Defensive Weapon Tactics

Active Parry

Dexterity, Combat
Proficiency with the standard defensive methods of the weapon class. This tactic reduces an opponent's percentage chance to hit by -Combat% and a -5% bonus for each level of advanced proficiency with that weapon class. After a hit is successfully evaded utilizing this tactic the parrying character may make an attempt to counter-attack. Make a Dexterity test with difficulty level equal to Impossible (D8) minus the weapon's Base Blows (Weapon Speed). Success allows the parrying character an immediate Normal Attack against his opponent. Any roll of all eights indicates the destruction of the parrying weapon, although the tactic may still be successful. The opponent may not utilize any defensive tactic against such a counter-attack. Please note the special instructions when using natural weapons to parry.

Off-Hand Parry

Dexterity, Combat
Proficiency with the defensive use of a second weapon from the weapon class. This tactic requires that the character be using only one-handed weapons and/or a shield. This tactic reduces an opponent's percentage chance to hit by -Combat% and a -2½% bonus (round down) for each level of advanced proficiency with that weapon class. Counter-attack Dexterity test difficulty level is equal to Tasking (D6) minus the parrying weapon's Base Blows (Weapon Speed), with success allowing the parrying character an immediate Normal Attack with the primary weapon. Any roll of all eights indicates the destruction of the parrying weapon, although the tactic may still be successful. The opponent may not utilize any defensive tactic against such a counter-attack. Please note the special instructions when using natural weapons to parry.

Desperate Defense

Combat
The ability to increase the effectiveness of parrying by taking advantage of the larger size of the weapon classes for which this tactic is available and giving up the counter-attack opportunity. This tactic is essentially “hiding” behind a shield. This tactic reduces an opponent's percentage chance to hit by -Combat% and a -5% bonus for each level of advanced proficiency with that weapon class and an additional -25% to the effectiveness of the parry. In defense against Missile weapons, +1 is added to Vigor for any Bash test required as the full energy of the projectile is absorbed directly into the shield weapon.
