Learning and Improving Skills

Experience points are spent in a number of ways to improve a character’s capabilities and skills.

Skills already known

Skills previously acquired (at level 1 or better) are increased with the expenditure of Experience points equal to the current level of skill times 100. For example; a Warrior hoping to improve his Hammers(1) skill would spend 100 points to achieve Hammers(2). Hammers(3) would require 200 additional points and so forth.

New Skills

New Skills are "locked" with the expenditure of 500 Experience Points and may not be utilized until a four month "learning" period has been completed. This period must not be interrupted by extensive adventuring. An exception to this is new Skills acquired via the Experience Bonus value on a newly generated character. Such Bonus Skills cost 100 points and have no learning period.

New Methods

These skills are locked in the same way as New Skills, but require a longer period of education before they can be utilized. This period is listed with the descriptions of the skills as “Time of Study” (Again, extensive campaigning during this period would severely disrupt the requisite learning processes.) Characters are required to provide sufficient moneys to maintain their current lifestyle for this period of time. An exception to this is new Methods acquired via the Experience Bonus value on a newly generated character. Such Bonus Methods cost 100 points and have no learning period.

Professional Skills

New Professional Skills are locked in the same way as New Skills, but require a longer period of education before they can be utilized. This period is listed with the descriptions of the skills as “Time of Study” (Again, extensive campaigning during this period would severely disrupt the requisite learning processes.) Characters are required to provide sufficient moneys to maintain their current lifestyle for this period of time.
Professional Skills previously acquired (at level 1 or better) are increased with the expenditure of Experience points equal to the current level of skill times 100. However, these skills continue to require the same education period every level they are to be increased.

Basic Proficiencies

Increasing a Proficiency (Combat, Stealth, Magic or Miracle) by one requires the expenditure of Experience Points equal to ten times the current score of that Proficiency. For example; our Warrior friend was fortunate enough to garner an initial Combat score of 19. To elevate that score to 20 would require 190 Experience Points. However, no amount of experience can improve any Basic Proficiency to greater than twice (2X) the character’s original score in that Proficiency.

Character Attributes

The character attribute of Intelligence, Wisdom, Constitution, Strength, Dexterity, Speech, Appearance, Art, Ethics, Faith, Charisma or Charm may be increased by one point as if it were a New Skill. Lock this improvement with the expenditure of 500 Experience Points. A four month “training" period is required. This period must not be interrupted by extensive adventuring. These improvements DO NOT include the recalculation of other, dependent, attributes.

Physical Characteristics

The physical characteristic of Body may be increased by one point with the expenditure of Experience Points equal to fifteen times the current characteristic value. Our example Warrior may want to increase his Body from 16 to 17. To do this he would expend 16 * 15 = 240 EP. Body may not be increased to greater than twice the characters’s combined Constitution and Strength.
The physical characteristic of Stamina may be increased by one point with the expenditure of Experience Points equal to twenty-five times the current characteristic value. Our example Warrior may want to increase his stamina from 8 to 9. To do this he would expend 8 * 25 = 200 EP. No amount of experience can improve Stamina beyond twice the character’s Constitution score.
There may be cases in which a character may not improve physical characteristics at all as these characteristics may initially exceed the aforementioned maximums. Such characters would have to first increase the limiting attribute(s).
